Four children have earned their schools a total of $9,000, thanks to their winning designs being picked by The Coffee Club New Zealand and KidsCan for their new Christmas cups and napkins.

More than 300 designs were received from over 30 schools to find the four winners. Portia De Luen, of Glen Eden Primary School took first prize for her design, earning $4,000 for her school. The second place entry received $3,000, third place $1,500 and fourth place $500. The four young artists also each received $250 Westfield vouchers. 

The Christmas Cup competition aims to raise awareness of the work being done by KidsCan to support the education, health and well-being of children living in hardship. It’s now in it’s third year and has seen $30,000 donated to schools and the Kids by The Coffee Club in that time. 

“It’s one of the best things we have the privilege of being involved in,” says Andy Lucas, Director of The Coffee Club. “The designs we received were so creative and fun. Picking a winner this year was really difficult, we had quite a few favourites to choose from! It’s great to see so many entries and to be able to help the winning schools.”

“We really love the Christmas cup competition. It’s lovely to see the winning designs getting made, but it’s great to get so many children involved in something which challenges them to be creative, while also drawing attention to the help we need,” says Sophie Martignier, Brand and Sponsorship Manager at KidsCan. “We’re really thankful to The Coffee Club for their support in making this happen and raising awareness of KidsCan.”

First place, to appear on the large takeaway cup, features 12-year-old Portia De Luen’s design of a cow and a sheep helping a kiwi bird place a star on the top of the tree. Second place was won by Mya Taylor (age 10) of Frankton School in Hamilton, whose design is on the medium takeaway cup and third place went to Harshini Naidu (age 10), from Firth Primary School, Matamata whose design is featured on the small takeaway cup. Fourth place was awarded to 10-year old Sala Fogavai, from Linden School in Wellington, whose festive design will be printed onto The Coffee Club luncheon napkins.

The designs will appear on takeaway coffee cups and napkins in stores from November. The competition was open to children from KidsCan partner schools, and asked them to submit a unique Christmas inspired design for cups and napkins.

KidsCan works to aid individuals, communities, businesses and the government to co-operate in providing food, clothing and basic health care in schools to enable all disadvantaged children to reach their full potential.  The Coffee Club New Zealand has been involved in a number of campaigns and initiatives with KidsCan including The Big Night In Telethon back in 2009, the Mystery Envelope Appeal, Christmas Crackers, Campbell Live Lunchbox Day Appeal and KidsCan Online Auctions.
